Tesla Model 3 depreciation
The UK’s highest-volume Tesla, which makes its depreciation the most competitive and the most condition-sensitive in the range.

The short answer
Model 3 depreciation is shaped more by supply than any other Tesla. Because so many are on the road, condition and specification do a larger share of the work, and the Highland refresh created a clear line between generations. Long Range holds up most consistently across the range.
- High supply means condition carries more weight than on rarer models
- The Highland refresh is the sharpest dividing line in the range
- Long Range is consistently the strongest all-round residual
Why volume changes the maths
The defining feature of Model 3 depreciation, and the one owners underestimate.
A buyer looking for a used Model 3 has a lot of choice. That is excellent for them and it puts real pressure on any car with a visible flaw, because the next listing is a click away and probably has cleaner wheels.
The practical effect is that the gap between a well-kept Model 3 and a tired one is proportionally wider than it would be on a Model X, where scarcity does more of the work. Kerbed alloys, chipped paint and worn white interiors cost more here than anywhere else in the range — see wheels and resale value.
How the generations separate
Three distinct positions in the used market.
| Generation | What defines it | Effect on value |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-2021 | Original interior, no heat pump, manual boot. | The value floor of the range. History and documentation matter most here. |
| 2021 update | Heat pump, powered boot, revised interior and trim. | A meaningful step up. Buyers actively search for post-update cars. |
| Highland (2024 on) | New front and rear lighting, revised interior, stalk changes, improved refinement. | Reset the top of the market and moved the previous generation down a step. |
How the variants behave
Same badge, three different depreciation curves.
- 01RWDThe volume car, and the one where supply pressure is highest. Condition does the most work here.
- 02Long Range AWDThe broadest used audience, so it places fastest and holds up most consistently.
- 03PerformanceCarries a premium that narrows steadily with age. Tyres, brakes and 20-inch wheel condition are scrutinised closely — see Performance, Plaid and resale value.
- 04Aero coversSmall, but genuinely noticed. Missing covers on an 18-inch car are an easy, cheap thing to put right before selling.
- 05White interiorDesirable when clean, punished when not. Bolster wear and staining are immediately visible.
- 06SoftwareOnly affects value where it transfers with the car — see does FSD add value at resale?
Mileage and warranty on a Model 3
Where the thresholds actually sit for this model.
Battery and drive unit cover runs to eight years with a mileage limit that varies by variant — Tesla publishes the current terms, and they differ between the standard-range and longer-range cars. Crossing that limit is a step change in the risk a buyer inherits, not a gradual slide.
Because Model 3 is often a high-mileage commuting car, this threshold is reached more often here than on Model S or X. A high-mileage Model 3 still inside cover can value better than a lower-mileage one outside it. More on how we read this in mileage and Tesla value and battery health and resale value.
What actually protects a Model 3’s value
Four things, in order of return.
| Action | Effect |
|---|---|
| Refurbish kerbed alloys | The highest-return single action on this model, because damage is so visible against the competition. |
| Find the aero covers | Cheap to resolve, awkward to explain away if they are missing. |
| Keep the service record | Matters most on pre-2021 cars. |
| Establish your generation | Knowing whether you have a 2021-update or Highland car changes the conversation, and the figure. |
