Guides / Choosing a route

What is the best place to sell a Tesla?

Five routes, and the honest answer is that the right one depends on what you are optimising for.

The short answer

There is no single best place to sell a Tesla. A private sale usually achieves the highest headline price but takes the most time and carries payment risk. Tesla trade-in is the most convenient if you are buying another Tesla. Marketplaces suit comparing offers. A specialist buyer suits speed, certainty and Tesla-specific valuation.

  • Optimise for one thing: price, speed, effort or certainty
  • Trade-in only works if you are buying another Tesla
  • Always compare at least two figures before deciding

03  Honest

Where we are not the answer

Worth saying plainly, because everyone else on this list will not.

If you have time, patience and a well-presented car, a private sale will usually beat every trade figure including ours. That is not a secret; it is the compensation for doing the work yourself and taking the risk.

If you are ordering another Tesla and want the simplest possible transaction, trade-in is genuinely convenient and we would not pretend otherwise.

Where we do argue for ourselves is Tesla-specific valuation. A generic system prices your car from registration, age and mileage. It cannot see variant, battery warranty position, whether software transfers, wheel condition or which generation you own — and on a Tesla those are worth real money. That is the whole argument, and it is set out in how a Tesla valuation is built.

04  Checklist

Before you choose

Four things to do whichever route you take.

  • 01
Get more than one figureA specialist number and a marketplace number tell you different things. Comparing costs nothing.
  • 02
Request your settlement figure earlyIf there is finance, everything else depends on it.
  • 03
Start any private plate transfer firstIt cannot be done after the car changes hands.
  • 04
Declare condition honestlyA declared fault is priced once. An undeclared one gets renegotiated, whoever you sell to.
  • 05
Check what is includedCables, key cards, load covers and aero covers all form part of the deal.
  • 06
Read the fee positionAsk about admin fees, collection fees and deductions before you agree anything.
