Tesla trade-in UK: how it works and your alternatives

Tesla will take your car in part exchange. There is one condition that decides whether it is the right route for you.

The short answer

Tesla accepts cars, vans and SUVs for trade-in toward the purchase of a new or used Tesla. The value is applied to your order — it cannot be taken as cash. If you are buying another Tesla, trade-in is convenient. If you are simply selling, you need a buyer rather than a part exchange.

  • Trade-in value can only be used against a Tesla purchase
  • Financed cars need a settlement letter from your lender
  • Estimated offers are valid seven days; final offers thirty

If the car is financedThe vehicle must be clear of finance at handover. You provide a settlement letter, and Tesla pays the balance after delivery of your new car.

02  Decision

The question that decides it

One condition governs whether trade-in is even an option for you.

Trade-in value can only be applied against a Tesla purchase. If you are ordering another Tesla, that is genuinely convenient — one appointment, one transaction, no second buyer to find.

If you are leaving Tesla, downsizing, going back to a combustion car or simply want the money, trade-in does not apply. You need a buyer, and the comparison is between a private sale, a marketplace, a general car-buying service and a specialist. That comparison is set out in best place to sell a Tesla.

The other consideration is timing. A trade-in is tied to your new car’s delivery date, and offers expire. If your delivery slips, the figure may need redoing. Selling separately decouples the two.

04  Plate

Private plates and finance, either way

Two things that catch people out on both routes.

Private registrations must come off before the car changes hands, whichever route you take. Start the DVLA process before you commit to a date — see selling a Tesla with a private plate.

Finance needs a settlement figure either way. On a trade-in you supply the settlement letter and Tesla pays the balance after delivery. Selling to us, the settlement is paid directly to your lender and any equity comes to you — see selling a Tesla with finance.

Promotions change. Tesla has run trade-in bonus offers in the UK at various points, with their own eligibility windows and delivery deadlines. Check the current terms on Tesla’s own site rather than relying on any third-party summary, including this one.
