Selling a Tesla on PCP
You can sell a car on PCP before the agreement ends. The mechanics are simpler than most owners expect, and the equity position is the only real variable.

The short answer
A Tesla on PCP can be sold before the end of the agreement once the lender’s settlement figure is paid. If the car is worth more than the settlement you receive the difference. If it is worth less, you pay the shortfall before the sale can complete. The settlement is paid directly to the lender, not to you.
- Request a settlement figure from your lender first — it is usually free
- Settlement figures are valid for a limited period, so timing matters
- The lender is paid directly, which is what closes the agreement properly
How a PCP sale actually works
Five steps, in order.
- 01Request your settlement figureContact your lender and ask for a settlement figure. It states exactly what is required to close the agreement and how long that figure stands.
- 02Get the car valuedThe valuation and the settlement figure together give you your equity position.
- 03Compare the two numbersValuation above settlement is positive equity. Below is negative equity. Neither prevents a sale.
- 04Settlement is paid to the lenderDirectly, so the agreement is formally closed rather than left outstanding.
- 05The balance is paid to youAny positive equity goes to your account after settlement clears.
- 06Confirm closureKeep the lender’s confirmation that the agreement has been settled.
Positive and negative equity
The only genuinely variable part of the process.
| Position | What it means | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Positive equity | The car is worth more than the settlement figure. | The difference is paid to you once settlement clears. |
| Level | Valuation and settlement are close. | The sale completes and little or nothing changes hands. |
| Negative equity | The settlement figure is higher than the car is worth. | The shortfall must be cleared before the sale completes. It does not stop the sale. |
Why timing matters on PCP
Three timing issues specific to finance sales.
Settlement figures expire. They are calculated to a date. If the sale slips past it, a fresh figure is needed and the number will have moved slightly.
Early in the agreement is where negative equity lives. PCP payments early on cover a smaller share of the depreciation than the car is losing, so shortfalls are most common in the first half of an agreement.
Near the end, the balloon dominates. Approaching the final payment, the settlement figure largely reflects that balloon, and equity often improves.
What this is, and what it is not
Worth stating plainly.
Everything here describes the mechanics of selling a vehicle with an agreement outstanding. It is information about the selling process, not financial advice, and we are not financial advisers.
If you are weighing whether selling is the right decision for your finances rather than how the process works, that is a conversation for a qualified adviser or your lender.
