Tesla Model Y depreciation
A family car first, which changes both how it wears and what the used market pays attention to.

The short answer
Model Y depreciation is supported by steady family demand, but the Juniper refresh reset the top of the market and earlier cars now compete against a visibly newer vehicle. Practical specification — tow package especially — holds value better than cosmetic options.
- Family demand keeps Model Y liquid across the range
- The Juniper refresh moved earlier cars down a step
- Practical specification outperforms cosmetic specification
Why Model Y holds up
The used audience is broader than for any other Tesla.
Model Y sells to families who need the space, which is a deeper and less fashion-driven pool of buyers than a performance saloon attracts. That supports values through the middle of the curve and means cars place relatively quickly.
It also means buyers inspect differently. They look in the boot, at the rear seat bases and at the roof glass, because those are the parts a family car actually uses.
Pre- and post-Juniper
The dividing line, and what it did to earlier cars.
| Generation | What defines it | Effect on value |
|---|---|---|
| 2022–2024 | The first widely delivered UK Model Y, with specification varying through the period. | Did not lose its audience, but now competes against a visibly newer car. |
| Juniper (2025 on) | Revised front and rear lighting and an updated interior. | Reset the top of the market. Valued as a separate proposition. |
| Launch editions | Limited early specification on the refreshed car. | Rare. Declare it — a generic valuation will miss it entirely. |
What holds value on a Model Y
Practicality beats appearance on this model, consistently.
- 01Tow packageGenuinely sought after and in short supply on the used market. The clearest specification positive on a Model Y.
- 02Wheel choice19-inch Gemini rides better on UK roads and costs less to shoe than 20 or 21-inch. Buyers weigh that.
- 03Load area conditionScuffed sill plates, worn load covers and missing boot floors are normal on family cars and priced as such — but only if declared.
- 04Rear seat conditionChild seat marks and ISOFIX wear are expected. Declaring them changes nothing at collection.
- 05Roof glassChips at the front edge of the panoramic roof are easy to miss and expensive to put right.
- 06Heat pump historyAny related warranty work is worth having documented.
Model Y against Model 3
The comparison people actually want.
Both sit on shared underpinnings, so the depreciation drivers are similar — generation, variant, battery position, condition. The differences are in the audience and the wear.
Model 3 faces deeper supply pressure, which makes cosmetic condition matter more. Model Y faces family use, which makes interior and load-area condition matter more and makes practical specification like a tow package worth more. Neither is inherently the better residual; the well-kept example of either beats the neglected one of the other.
The full mechanism is in Tesla depreciation, explained, and the Model 3 equivalent of this page is Model 3 depreciation.
