Selling a Tesla with a private plate
Entirely straightforward if you start early. A genuine problem if you start late.

The short answer
If you want to keep a personalised registration, the transfer off the vehicle must be completed before the car changes hands. You either take the registration off to a retention document or transfer it straight to another vehicle you own. Once a car is sold with the plate still on it, the registration goes with the car.
- Start the transfer before you agree a collection date
- The car reverts to its original registration once the plate comes off
- A sale cannot complete mid-transfer, so timing is everything
Your two routes
Both go through DVLA, and both need doing before the sale completes.
| Route | What happens | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Retention | The registration comes off the car onto a retention document held in your name. | You do not have another vehicle ready for it yet. |
| Direct transfer | The registration moves straight onto another vehicle you own. | You already have the replacement car. |
Why timing decides everything
The single most common cause of a delayed Tesla collection.
While a transfer is in progress the vehicle’s registration is changing, and a sale cannot cleanly complete in the middle of that. In practice that means starting the process before you book collection, not after.
Once the registration is removed, the car reverts to its previous registration — the one it was originally issued or an age-related replacement. That is the registration the sale completes under, and the one we will need for the paperwork.
Tell us at the valuation stage that a plate is coming off. It changes nothing about your figure, and it lets us plan collection around the transfer rather than being surprised by it.
Practical points
Six things worth knowing before you start.
- 01The car usually needs to be availableDVLA may require the vehicle to be inspected or its details confirmed, so do not arrange this for the week the car is leaving.
- 02Tax and MOT status matterA vehicle generally needs to be taxed or on SORN, and in a position to be inspected, for a transfer to proceed.
- 03Physical platesOnce the registration changes, the car needs correct plates fitted before it goes anywhere on the road.
- 04Tell your insurerThe registration on your policy will change, twice if you are also moving it to another car.
- 05Keep the paperworkThe retention document or transfer confirmation is what proves the registration is yours.
- 06Do not leave it to the dayThis is the one part of selling a Tesla that genuinely cannot be rushed.
If you have already sold the car
A short and unwelcome answer.
If a vehicle has been sold with the personalised registration still on it, the registration transferred with the car. Recovering it depends entirely on the new keeper agreeing to transfer it back, and they are under no obligation to do so.
This is why we ask about private plates early. It costs nothing to mention it, and it is not fixable afterwards.
