Transferring Tesla ownership after a sale

The step almost every Tesla seller forgets, because no other car requires it.

The short answer

After selling a Tesla you need to do two separate things: notify DVLA of the change of keeper, and remove the vehicle from your Tesla account. The second has no equivalent on a normal car. Until you do it, the car may still appear in your app and your personal data stays on the vehicle.

  • DVLA notification and Tesla account removal are two separate jobs
  • Factory reset the car before handover, after retrieving anything you need
  • Unpair phone keys and remove saved addresses and accounts
What’s your Tesla worth? Free, no obligation, and a real valuer reviews every car. Takes about a minute.

What to do, and when

Sequence matters — some steps cannot be undone once the car has gone.

  • 01
Before handover: retrieve what you needDashcam or Sentry footage, saved addresses, any charging records you want to keep. Once reset, they are gone.
  • 02
Before handover: remove phone keysAny phone paired as a key, including family members’ devices and any you no longer use.
  • 03
Before handover: sign out of accountsStreaming, music and any connected services signed in on the car.
  • 04
Before handover: factory resetThis clears profiles, saved addresses, contacts and paired devices from the vehicle.
  • 05
At handover: all keys and cardsMost cars came with two key cards. Missing ones are replaceable but declare it in advance.
  • 06
After the sale: remove the car from your accountDone through the Tesla app or your Tesla account. This is the step people miss.
02  DVLA

Notifying DVLA

Separate from anything Tesla-related, and legally your responsibility as the seller.

You must tell DVLA when you sell or transfer a vehicle. Do it online through GOV.UK for the fastest confirmation, and keep the acknowledgement — it is your evidence that you are no longer the registered keeper.

If you are keeping a personalised registration, the transfer has to be completed before the car changes hands. See our guide to selling a Tesla with a private plate.

When you sell to us, we handle our side of the paperwork — but the keeper notification remains yours to submit.

03  App

Removing the car from your Tesla account

The Tesla-specific part, and the one with no equivalent elsewhere.

Tesla provides a process in the app and account area for removing a vehicle you no longer own. Exactly where it sits has moved between app versions, so check Tesla’s current guidance rather than an old forum post — this is one area where instructions age badly.

Until it is done, the vehicle may continue to appear in your app. That is untidy rather than dangerous, but it also means your account remains associated with a car you have sold, which is worth closing off properly.

Do it once the sale has completed and the car has physically gone, not before — you may still need app access up to the point of collection.
